Tomato hornworm and braconid wasps. These worms de Tomato hornworm and braconid wasps. These worms decimate tomato plants, but this is an example of nature at its best.

“A female wasp has laid her eggs under the skin of that hornworm. As the eggs hatch the larvae actually feed on the hornworm insides. The larvae eat their way out of the caterpillar and spin the cocoons you see. Eventually adult wasps will emerge from the cocoons and the weakened hornworm will die.”

I try to plant small flowers like tansy and yarrow in my pollinator garden close by and let some carrots, dill, cilantro, and fennel flower to entice these wasps to stay in my garden and do pest management for me.

Native bee house update. It’s working! Look at a Native bee house update. It’s working! Look at all of the blocked up holes. Looks like the smaller holes seem to be more desireable. So we’ll try more smaller bamboo pieces next year.

Cut worms. Those awful grubs do crazy damage to my Cut worms. Those awful grubs do crazy damage to my seedlings. My first planting of cabbage and broccoli got chopped down except 1 of each. So this planting I’m trying this. No idea if it’ll work. I cut a toilet paper roll in half and put it around the base. I’ll keep you posted if they survive.

I’m a sucker for repurposing. So @whogivesacraptp toilet paper roll gets a second life.

Yesterday’s harvest coming in full color. The wa Yesterday’s harvest coming in full color. The warm weather crops are starting!!! Yay!

We are trying 2 new things this year from @funkesgreenhouse. Guatemalan Blue squash and white eggplant. We made an orzo, squash, eggplant pesto pasta last night with our harvest. Tonight we’ll use the cabbage and carrots in an egg roll in a bowl and the kale and carrots went in our smoothie this morning.

Garlic. We harvested our garlic about 3 weeks ago. Garlic. We harvested our garlic about 3 weeks ago. When we see the last 2-3 leaves yellow then it’s time to pull them. It kept raining so was struggling to know when to pull them. But they seem to all be in tact and not rotting. Now we are curing them in a cool, dark basement for use this winter. We will use the garlic scapes first since they don’t last as long as well cured garlic.

New garden beds. Each year we take out more grass New garden beds. Each year we take out more grass to plant flowers for pollinators and edibles. This year we did some of the front and back of our house. I had some great helpers. Wow. They are troopers! They spread a whole truck load of composted soil. Now my herbs will get more sun. This season is definitely an experimentation with what grows well in this new bed and learning what the deer won’t eat. Thanks @shawdom for letting us borrow your truck.

Rhubarb pie with homemade crust. We followed @mart Rhubarb pie with homemade crust. We followed @marthastewart recipe for rhubarb pie for the filling but followed our own pie crust recipe. https://www.marthastewart.com/343999/rhubarb-pie

Pie crust recipe (this recipe makes 2 pie crusts).
I always make 2 and freeze the other one for future use.

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups flour
1 Tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/2 - 3/4 cup ice cold water

Fill a liquid measuring cup with water and several ice cubes, and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar and salt. Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture, and work together with a pastry blender. Work until the mixture looks sandy and the butter is about the size of peas. The mixture will look uneven, which is ok.

Pour 1/2 cup of the ice water (no ice cubes) in the flour-butter mixture. Use a rubber spatula, or your hands (I find it easier to use my hands at this point) to gather and mix the dough together. Dip your fingers in the ice water and continue to work the dough until the mixture has fully come together. Be careful not to overwork the dough. Add more water if needed.

Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic and chill for at least an hour.

*Most of the videos were taken from last year.
