Strawberry shortcake. One of my favorite things to $Strawberry shortcake. One of my favorite things to make with fresh strawberries. @nytcooking has a really great recipe. Best shortcake I’ve had, and the strawberries from @bloomsandberries hit the spot! My son is starting to be able to read and he does well with fractions. So doing recipes with him just got a lot easier. I can write down the ingredients of a recipe and he can follow along. Strawberries. I wish I could say this was from our garden, but our strawberry patch is minuscule right now, and all the wildlife are just wrecking havoc on them, but @bloomsandberries has it going on! So excited to start cooking with these. We froze a lot of them today, but here comes strawberry shortcake, pie, ice cream, scones, smoothies, etc.

I love sweet strawberry face smiles. Ha I think she was sampling the product. What do you think?

Poppies. This is my first year growing these beaut

Poppies. This is my first year growing these beauties. My kids and I were making rhubarb scones in the kitchen and I looked out the window into our garden and eeked with excitement that the poppy bloomed. My son rushed to the flower to be the first to get a closer look, exclaiming “Mom, it has purple pollen! How cool is that!!”

It really is so cool! I had no idea poppies had purple pollen and the fact that he noticed that right away. 🥰Mother Nature is so incredible.

Plant sales and nurseries. We ordered presale from

Plant sales and nurseries. We ordered presale from the @civic_garden_center annual plant sale this year. As we were driving through the beautiful rows of tables of seedlings to pick up our order, my daughter exclaimed how much she really wanted pink flowers. Our order didn’t have that so I asked if she wanted to go to another local nursery since we wouldn’t be able to go to the open sale tomorrow. She excitedly said yes so we went to @funkesgreenhouse. I was expecting to only get 1 maybe 2 plants. We came back with a plant tray full and then some. Em chose this beautiful petunia. We are so lucky to have such great sales and nurseries in our area. This weekend alone there’s a sale at @civic_garden_center @mustardseedfarmcsa @fernshopcincinnati and probably more than that! And of course the other nurseries are busting with things too. It’s my favorite time of year!

I always start a ton from seed but I’m a sucker for supporting local especially when the varieties are endless! Go check out the plant sales this weekend or your local nursery! They have so much right now!

Native bee house. My husband and son made this bea

Native bee house. My husband and son made this beautiful bee house. I’m so excited! We are trying to help the pollinators as much as possible. We have it facing southeast in a sunny and undisturbed spot. They made it so that each of the bamboo and wood pieces can be replaced and cleaned to prevent diseases. Love it!

Piloy beans. Last year I was given these beautiful

Piloy beans. Last year I was given these beautiful beans from Guatemala. One plant can produce all of these different colored beans. Isn’t that amazing??

I planted them last year, but we finally got these incredible brilliant orange flowers right before the first frost. So it never had time to produce the beans. This year, I’ve started them indoors in February in the hopes of getting at least one pod. The vine is sooooo vigorous and beautiful and the deer don’t eat the leaves (which they eat pretty much any other bean leaf I grow).

I’m going to give one of my seedlings to my mom who lives further south in the hopes that her growing season will be long enough in case I still can’t get one in time. Here’s to hoping!

Sweet potatoes. Trying a new method that I learned from @dan__north_hadrian to start sweet potato slips.

You leave the sweet potatoes whole and place them in seed starting soil. Keep them in a dark place with a heating pad until they start to grow stems and leaves.

He always has such huge sweet potato slips, so I’m trying it out with 3 different kinds of sweet potatoes.

Brussels sprouts. I’ve never been successful at

Brussels sprouts. I’ve never been successful at growing these but last fall I gave it another shot. They didn’t do much before the first frost so I packed leaves around them and assumed they’d die with the cold winter. To my surprise, they look great! They survived and are growing better than I’ve ever grown them! Late winter is such a fun and sobering time. You see what survived and what died. So far I’m having some good luck!!
