Garlic. A couple weeks ago we harvested our garlic Garlic. A couple weeks ago we harvested our garlic and are now drying it out.

The second picture shows at what stage we harvest. We harvest our garlic when the lower leaves have browned. According to Ohio State extension, “When the lower leaves begin to yellow, the garlic is ready for harvest. The leaves are actually connected to the garlic bulb wrappers below. Waiting until leaves turn brown will result in rotted or missing wrappers. Also, as the bulbs mature, they may dry and split, leading to shorter storage life or bulb rot.”

The third picture shows that this year we intercropped sweet potatoes and dill. I was afraid it would hurt the roots of the sweet potatoes when we dug them up, but it didn’t seem to be a problem.

Cucumelon (Mexican Sour Gherkin) or we like to cal Cucumelon (Mexican Sour Gherkin) or we like to call them cucumbos. This is our first year growing them, and they are a big hit! I can’t wait to have enough to pickle. They are bite size so you can just pop them in your mouth so we’ll see if we can save any to actually pickle them.

Ha yes she’s a mess. She just finished playing in the mud kitchen and her hair needs a clip, but I love our little garden girl.

Zucchini. First normal sized zucchini of the seaso Zucchini. First normal sized zucchini of the season! We made Farinata (also called socca - a flatbread made out of chickpea flour). We basically followed the recipe from @nytcooking.

We topped one with garden fresh herby cream cheese, fried eggs from @thegormanheritagefarm, and lemon marinated zucchini.

The second one had mango chutney, white cheddar, fried egg, avocado, and cilantro lime drizzle. It can be eaten warm or cold.

So so tasty and packed with vegetarian protein.

Dutch babies. We went from a 2 recipe family to a Dutch babies. We went from a 2 recipe family to a 3 recipe family today. We love the recipe from @thekitchn and make them often.

Today’s version:
1 - mango chutney, sharp white cheddar cheese, homemade bacon made from @thegormanheritagefarm pork, and toasted kale from our garden with cumin and coriander.

2 - cream cheese spread (1 package cream cheese, 2 Tbsp sugar and 1/2 tsp vanilla), strawberries and our garden mulberries.

3 - cream cheese spread, Granny Smith apple and caramel sauce.

I tried to put 2 recipes in a 13” cast iron pan, and it didn’t go up the sides like it was supposed to, but it bubbled a ton in the middle and flattened out well when I took it out of the pan, so we still got the same texture we were looking for.

Garlic scapes. Only hardneck garlic bulbs grow the Garlic scapes. Only hardneck garlic bulbs grow the scapes which are the tender stem and flower bud of the garlic plant.

We use them like we use garlic bulbs. We always grow more than we can use right away. To preserve them, we grind them up in a food processor with some oil. Then we freeze them in a thin layer. Then when we need garlic for a recipe, we just break off a frozen piece.

They also make great necklaces. Haha.

Strawberries. We went strawberry picking at @bloom Strawberries. We went strawberry picking at @bloomsandberries a couple weeks ago and have been enjoying the fruits of late spring.

1-2 strawberry picking

3 - fresh strawberry salad with homemade poppyseed dressing (@thekitchn has a great recipe).

4 - We picked so much that we froze all but 4 lbs for later usage. We find the best way to freeze strawberries is on a cookie grate on top of a sheet pan. Then once frozen toss them into a freezer storage container.

5 - Smoothies and muffins. Our go to smoothie combination is kale, carrots, frozen avocado, bananas, strawberries, mangoes, yogurt and water. We have a vitamix so it crunches up the veggies so you can’t tell they are even in there. The muffins were strawberry rhubarb almond from a recipe from @saveurmag. I just added strawberries and subbed half of the AP flour with almond flour.

6 - strawberry shortcake. Recipe from @nytcooking.

7-8 - Homemade strawberry and mint ice cream. My kids and husband made this. They love harvesting and snacking on the mint, so my son came up with the flavor combination. Two tastes that make me think of summer.

Oh how we love strawberries!! What’s your favorite way to use strawberries?

Kansai style Okonomiyaki. As Asian American Pacifi Kansai style Okonomiyaki. As Asian American Pacific and Islander Heritage month comes to an end, we made okinomiyaki that we learned from @quanhapa a few years ago last night, and enjoyed wonderful dance and music at @esotericbeer while eating at @decibelchicken at their Chinese Heritage Day.

So thankful to live in a city that has so many opportunities for us to learn about different cultures and eat/drink such delicious food!

Gardening with kids makes life so much more fun! W Gardening with kids makes life so much more fun! Watching them have an outlet for exploring and being in a safe space to try new flavors and tastes is such a huge deal for getting kids to want to eat more healthy. And having fun in that space is even better!!

First day of summer break and it’s already an adventure. Lots of love for this lettuce face crew.
